10,000 Bitcoin Moved From Mt. Gox Hack

According to Chainalysis, 10,000 bitcoin worth $165 million were transferred today to a Russian exchange. The bitcoin have been dormant since 2017, when the Mt. Gox hack took place.

According to the blockchain analysts, the bitcoin had been sitting in BTC-e's wallet, but were sent today to a group of personal wallets, exchanges, and other services. According to Chainalysis, BTC-e started pulling funds from its own wallets almost a month ago.

On October 26, BTC-e initially transferred small amounts of bitcoin to Webmoney. On November 11, BTC-e made a test payment from the wallet, and ten days later another 100 bitcoin were indirectly transferred to an exchange.

Of the total amount sent over the past few days, about 9,950 bitcoin remain in personal wallets, while the rest was moved through a chain of intermediaries to four receive addresses at two major exchanges," Chainalysis said. The tracing showed that a "Russian exchange may have acted as an intermediary for laundering BTC-e."

Mt. Gox handled 60 percent of the world's bitcoin trading volume in 2013. In 2014, 850,000 bitcoin were stolen in a hack. A few months ago, the exchange started compensating victims.
