One post, $450 million: Trump sends memecoin on a rollercoaster ride
A controversial Truth Social post from U.S. President Donald Trump has again launched an obscure memecoin to insane heights.

A controversial Truth Social post from U.S. President Donald Trump has again launched an obscure memecoin to insane heights. This time it's Pope Coin.
On Saturday May 3, 2025, Trump shared an image of himself dressed as the pope. The post sparked angry reactions within both the Republican Party and the Christian community, who labeled the image blasphemous.
But online investors saw something else: an opportunity. Shortly after the post, Pope Coin launched and the coin shot almost immediately to a market cap of around $450 million. The party didn’t last, though—the price soon cratered and is now around $56 million.
It isn’t the first time Trump has been tied to crypto controversy. His own memecoin, simply called TRUMP, launched in January 2025 and peaked at $75 billion—only to be dragged down by the market about 80 percent.
A brief resurgence followed recently after Trump invited the biggest supporters of his coin to an “exclusive gala dinner” at Mar-a-Lago. Legal experts describe conflicts of interest and even corruption. Democratic senators are now calling for impeachment.
Whether the president is deliberately manipulating the market with his crypto exploits or simply trying to ride a new digital hype remains a topic of debate. One thing’s for sure: the line between political theater and financial speculation is getting blurrier.
