Analysts See Buying Opportunity After Binance's $6.3 Billion Hack

Wall Street analysts mainly see damage for Binance itself; Tether, Circle, and Ripple have already frozen billions in stolen assets. The focus is now shifting to Bitcoin support around $75,000.

Analysts See Buying Opportunity After Binance's $6.3 Billion Hack

Key Takeaways

  • Binance's $6.3 billion hack pressured the crypto market on Friday, but analysts see the damage mainly as limited to Binance itself.
  • Tether, Circle, and Ripple together froze billions in stolen assets; according to Binance, about $3 billion has now been frozen.
  • Analysts expect crypto stocks to recover and see Bitcoin support mainly around $75,000 to $77,000.

The $6.3 billion (€5.7 billion) hack at Binance put pressure on the crypto market on Friday, but several Wall Street analysts do not think the damage will last long. Cantor Fitzgerald, TD Cowen, and Compass Point see the incident mainly as a heavy blow to Binance itself, not to Bitcoin or the broader crypto market.

Analysts See No Systemic Damage

Cantor analyst Ramsey El-Assal pointed out that the sector reacted quickly. Tether froze more than $1.5 billion (€1.3 billion) in stolen assets, Circle blocked another $800 million (€719 million), and Ripple locked up about $200 million (€180 million). According to Binance, a total of about $3 billion (€2.7 billion) of the loot has been frozen, although that does not mean the money has already been recovered.

El-Assal called the hack painful, but also said the crypto sector is getting better at dealing with this kind of attack. He expects crypto stocks like Coinbase, Robinhood, and Strategy to recover once the initial shock fades. Those stocks fell sharply on Friday, with Coinbase and Strategy down 12% and Robinhood down about 9%.

TD Cowen analyst Lance Vitanza made a similar point. In his view, the attack mainly shows a weak spot in Binance, not in the technology behind Bitcoin or other crypto. He compared it to a bank robbery that does not invalidate the use of dollars.

Binance and the Broader Market

The attack appears to have targeted Binance's transaction-signing infrastructure, not the Bitcoin network itself. Compass Point also said Binance likely has enough resources to compensate customers. The analysts pointed to, among other things, $1.2 billion (€1.1 billion) in extra USDT reserves, about $1.2 billion (€1.1 billion) in Bitcoin reserves, and more than $1.5 billion (€1.3 billion) in USDC treasury assets.

That does not mean there will be no consequences. Compass Point expects pressure on the stablecoin supply if Binance reimburses customers and warned that withdrawals from DeFi platforms could increase once the market reopens. Trading could also shift to rivals like Coinbase and Bullish, and to decentralized exchanges like Hyperliquid, where users keep custody of their own assets.

For Bitcoin, Compass Point is mainly watching the $75,000 (€67,400) to $77,000 (€69,200) zone. A break below that level could put the recent rebound at risk. At the same time, the context is different from 2022, El-Assal stressed: this is a heavy blow, but not a repeat of FTX's collapse.

Why This Matters for European Readers

For European crypto investors, the main takeaway is that a major hack does not automatically mean trust in the entire market disappears. The quick freezing of stolen assets also shows how important cooperation is between exchanges, stablecoin issuers, and blockchain researchers. At the same time, an incident like this can put the spotlight back on security, custody, and the role of major crypto exchanges in the market.

Binance said it has already set aside its own funds to absorb the damage, similar to the way the company also set aside reserves after the record hack earlier to cover losses.
