Futures contracts on cocoa beans: The raw material used to make chocolate was more successful than Bitcoin this year.

Bitcoin, as measured by annual returns, is among the most successful assets in 2024. Since Jan. 1, the leading crypto has risen about 125 percent, according to data from Yahoo Finance.

By comparison, Commodities - the SEC classifies BTC as a Commodity -. as gold achieved in 2024 a return of 26 percent, while silver rose 21 percent.

But Bitcoin is no match for one commodity this year: cocoa. According to market data from Market Watch the relevant futures (CC00) rose 180 percent.

Cocoa is traded in the financial markets primarily through futures contracts on exchanges such as ICE Futures US and ICE Futures Europe.

Cocoa prices have exploded due to significant supply shortages caused by falling yields in West Africa.
