Bio Protocol: The front-runner in the DeSci sector?
When it comes to exploring new markets, blockchain technology keeps proving itself surprisingly inventive.

When it comes to exploring new markets, blockchain technology keeps proving itself surprisingly inventive. One of the most ambitious projects in this space focuses on medical science, housed in the emerging field of "Decentralized Science," or DeSci. In this niche, Bio Protocol has established itself as a promising player for biotech research. The project is building an advanced token ecosystem that should benefit both researchers and investors from scientific breakthroughs. Recent protocol updates, aimed at strengthening incentive structures, could spark the next growth phase.
What is Bio Protocol?
Many promising scientific projects regularly stall due to funding gaps and bulky bureaucracy. Bio Protocol aims to offer a solution. It acts as a funding platform to speed up the development and commercialization of medical innovations. Through blockchain tech, resources are raised in a decentralized way, intellectual property is turned into digital assets, and investors are financially involved in the proceeds of successful research through tokens.
The hub of this system is the Bio Token. This governance token gives holders voting rights within the ecosystem. They help determine which projects receive support. These projects are housed in decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), of which there are ten active. In addition, the token serves as an access pass for early investments, offering perks such as discounts on tokens and exclusive access to product data or services. Upon reaching milestones, involved parties also receive a bonus in the form of Bio Tokens.
The Bio DAOs
The success of Bio Protocol ultimately hinges on the performance of the Bio DAOs. And that’s not just a gamble on scientific progress, but also on the successful commercialization of these innovations. The focus is on the cutting edge of medical research.
VitaDAO focuses on aging research and has received four million dollars in investments from pharma giant Pfizer. CryoDAO develops applications around cryogenic preservation, while AthenaDAO focuses on women’s health. Even hair loss gets attention via HairDAO. Despite the high trust threshold in this niche, many of these DAOs already collaborate with universities, clinical trials, and even hold patents. The total market value of Bio DAOs is currently around $300 million, with about $15 million having flowed to research via the Bio Protocol.
Science as a revenue model
While the mission is scientific, the approach is clearly market-driven. Bio Protocol uses a venture-capital-like model. For a $100,000 grant, a DAO typically commits about 6.9% of its token supply to the shared treasury, the Bio Treasury. Both this treasury and early investors benefit from token appreciation. At least in theory, because the market is still volatile. For example, VitaDAO’s VITA token has fallen roughly 90% from its peak, a trend representative of the entire DAO token market.
Besides token values, they’re also creating value by monetizing IP. Research is turned into tradable IP NFTs or IP tokens, allowing datasets and patents to be sold or licensed to biotech companies. Revenues flow back to the DAOs and form a new funding source.
Automation and innovation
Bio Protocol positions itself as a central hub in the still-early DeSci landscape, and it’s taken seriously in that role. Binance participated in a strategic funding round in November 2024. The hope is that the platform acts as a catalyst for DeSci initiatives’ growth and could, for investors, translate into rising token value. But there are no guarantees: the sector is young and still experimental in many ways.
The Bio Token itself is still finding its footing. Since its January launch, the token has borne the brunt of the bear market: the price fell 90%, and the market cap dropped from $1.3 billion to $900 million.
Waiting for the DeSci wave
A potential turning point could come from Bio V1, a recent protocol update that not only improved the infrastructure but also added new features. There’s now a Launchpad that automates the application process for DAOs, and BioAgents AI-based research helpers are entering the mix. New "Milestone Incentives" reward projects for reaching goals like product launches. At the same time, these innovations encourage the use of Bio Tokens for staking and platform fees, which could revive demand for the token.
