Bitcoin Falls Below $82,000 After $431 Million in Liquidations

The drop came alongside $431 million in liquidations on crypto exchanges, while Ether, SOL, and DOGE also came under pressure. Weak Nasdaq futures added more weight to risk sentiment.

Bitcoin Falls Below $82,000 After $431 Million in Liquidations

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin fell to around $81,800 after peaking near $85,000, leaving it about 2% lower over 24 hours.
  • About $431 million in crypto positions were liquidated over 24 hours, mostly from leveraged traders who could no longer cover their losses.
  • Altcoins also fell, while weak Nasdaq futures put more pressure on risk sentiment.

Bitcoin slipped back to around $81,800 (€72,800) after briefly touching nearly $85,000 (€75,700). That gave Bitcoin back about $3,000 (€2,670) in gains in less than a day, and the price was about 2% lower over 24 hours.

Liquidations Piled Up Fast

The move came alongside a wave of liquidations on crypto exchanges. According to CoinGlass, about $431 million (€384 million) in positions were closed over 24 hours because traders using borrowed money could no longer cover their losses.

Of that total, about $173 million (€154 million) came from short sellers during the rise. Over the past 12 hours, though, most of the liquidations were bullish bets: $210 million (€187 million) out of $222 million (€198 million). The biggest single hit was a Bitcoin long worth $11.8 million (€10.5 million) on Binance, which was closed around $83,500 (€74,300).

Altcoins Followed Lower

Other major tokens also took hits. HYPE fell 4.5% to around $78 (€69), DOGE lost nearly 4%, and SOL dropped 3%. Ether slid 2% to just under $2,400 (€2,140). Only XMR moved against the trend, rising 11% to around $650 (€579), according to CoinDesk data.

The crypto market has already seen big swings in October, with Bitcoin moving between about $79,800 (€71,000) and $87,220 (€77,600) this month. That makes the drop below $82,500 (€73,400) especially important, since some market watchers see that as a level that could open the door to $70,000 (€62,300) if it breaks lower. The recent trading also fits the broader derivatives market, where Bitcoin options are increasingly being used to hedge risk instead of just speculating on direction.

Weak Tech Did Not Help

The stock market also offered no support for sentiment. Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1.1% after Tesla lowered its spending outlook and Lam Research came out with a weak forecast. For European crypto watchers, this shows how quickly Bitcoin can still move with broader risk sentiment, especially when leveraged positions are being wiped out at the same time.
