Bitcoin Lags as Stocks Hit Fresh Records

While the S&P 500 and MSCI hit record highs on AI optimism, BTC is still stuck around $64,000. Ether and most major coins are trading flat to lower.

Bitcoin Lags as Stocks Hit Fresh Records

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin held near $64,000 on Wednesday and was up less than 1%, while the biggest cryptos mostly traded flat to lower.
  • Stocks around the world hit fresh records, supported by AI optimism, with solid gains in the MSCI All Country World Index and Asian markets.
  • The crypto market has not gotten a clear boost for three sessions in a row, even with moves in Brent, Treasuries, gold, and rate expectations.

Bitcoin and the largest cryptocurrencies barely budged on Wednesday, even as stocks across the globe pushed to new highs on fresh enthusiasm around the AI trade. The move left crypto behind a broader risk-on rally that would normally give the market a lift.

Bitcoin Stays Near $64,000 (€55,600)

BTC traded just above $64,000 (€55,600), gaining less than 1% on the day and remaining essentially unchanged over the past week. Ether slipped to $1,864 (€1,620) and is down 2% for the week, making it the only major coin in negative territory over that period. XRP lost almost 1% to $1.07 (€0.93), Dogecoin fell by a similar amount to just under 7 cents, and Tron edged down by a little less than 1% to 33 cents. Solana held steady around $73.60 (€64), while BNB climbed more than 1% to $598 (€519) and remains the strongest major coin over the past seven days, up 5%.

Hyperliquid's HYPE was another standout, rising 3% to nearly $56 (€49) and also up 3% on the week. That shows there is still some selective buying in the market, but not enough to give the larger coins much momentum.

Stocks Keep Pulling Away

The gap with equities was hard to miss. MSCI's All Country World Index added 0.4% to a record high, the Asia Pacific benchmark climbed 2.2%, and Australian stocks reached a new peak after the S&P 500 and the Dow both closed at all-time highs on Tuesday.

Tech stocks also stayed in favor. SK Hynix rose 6.4% after the open in Seoul, and Nvidia gained more than 2% in after-hours trading, even as AMD dropped 9% after issuing a weaker sales forecast. SpaceX fell 7.5% on expectations of higher AI spending.

Why This Matters for Crypto

That backdrop matters for Bitcoin because the asset tends to react quickly to macro headlines, liquidity conditions, and shifts in market sentiment. Its fixed supply of 21 million coins makes the price especially sensitive to changes in demand, and crypto news can feed through fast when risk appetite improves or fades. For European crypto readers, the current price action is notable because Brent, rate expectations, and stocks are all pointing in a different direction than crypto.

Brent crude dropped 1.1% to about $78.50 (€68) per barrel after Axios reported that Washington, Tehran, and Oman were close to a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, Treasuries and gold moved higher, while traders dialed back expectations for more rate hikes. Even with those shifts, crypto still failed to get a clear lift for a third straight session, suggesting buyers are looking elsewhere for now. In a separate report, it was already clear that Bitcoin volatility is easing further, despite weak ETF flows and other headwinds.
