Bitcoin more popular than gold among Americans
American investors now hold more Bitcoin than gold.

American investors now own more Bitcoin than gold. This comes from a recent report from asset manager River. According to the figures, 49.6 million Americans own Bitcoin, while only 36.7 million hold physical gold.
While gold is still seen as an important investment, the report notes that the metal’s role is gradually losing ground. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is steadily growing into the United States’ top alternative ‘store-of-value’.
Adoption isn’t limited to individual investors. River notes that American citizens and institutions together hold roughly 40% of the total Bitcoin supply. In mining, the U.S. also plays a dominant role: 36% of the world’s hashrate comes from the United States, and a whopping 38% of all BTC mined since 2021 was produced there.
Yet gold remains the largest by market cap for now. While both Bitcoin and gold are near their respective all-time highs, gold (according to data from CompaniesMarketCap) is still ten times as valuable as Bitcoin.
To reach parity in market cap, the price of one BTC would have to rise to about one million dollars. While that may still sound like future-talk to some, several analysts see this path as achievable by 2028.
