BMW gears up for the leap into Web3. In the U.S., the German automaker has filed NFT and Metaverse patents to protect its own brand. The applications mainly cover downloadable multimedia files, but also virtual garments authenticated by "non-fungible tokens." BMW also had its logo protected in the virtual space.
The automaker had already experimented with its own NFT collection on the OpenSea marketplace. The patent filings now suggest a deeper commitment. BMW isn't the only automaker embracing Web3. Hyundai, Ford, and Mercedes-Benz have also filed patents for NFTs and the Metaverse. Alfa Romeo goes even further. In the upcoming Tonale model, the Italian maker will install an NFT feature intended to help combat speedometer fraud. The race to Web3 has only just begun.
Companies and celebrities are increasingly seeing the metaverse as a new way to promote their brands. For example, Paris Hilton previously teamed up with The Sandbox.
