Mercado Bitcoin is taking a big step toward blockchain-based finance: the company aims to tokenize more than $200 million in Real World Assets (RWA’s), including bonds and equity instruments, on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). This makes it one of the largest tokenization projects by a Latin American party on the XRPL network to date.
Mercado Bitcoin is no stranger to Ripple technology. It previously used Ripple Payments for cross-border transactions between Brazil and Portugal. Now the exchange is taking it a step further with asset tokenization, and consciously chooses the XRPL infrastructure.
According to Ripple LATAM director Silvio Pegado, the collaboration underscores the trust that institutional players already have in public blockchains: “The integration of Mercado Bitcoin into the XRPL shows that public blockchain infrastructures are increasingly becoming the reliable base for regulated financial products.”
Mercado Bitcoin has long operated at the crossroads of traditional finance and blockchain. It previously tokenized more than 1 billion Brazilian reais in private loans — about $182 million — and is among the leaders in Real World Assets in the region. By moving now to the XRPL, it ties itself to a global network used by more than 70 central banks, regulators, and financial institutions.
The timing of this initiative is no accident. A joint report by Ripple and Boston Consulting Group projects the market for tokenizing real assets to grow from roughly $0.6 trillion in 2025 to nearly $19 trillion in 2033. In that light, this collaboration isn’t just a milestone but a strategic move for the future.
Ripple continues to steadily expand its network of partners. In addition to Mercado Bitcoin, recent collaborations include the AI company Webus, German DZ Bank, and various initiatives in the Middle East. Ripple also recently applied for a national banking license in the U.S., signaling serious ambitions in the regulated financial world.
