As confirmed by several developers, Cardano experienced a partial outage of its network on the night of Saturday, January 21. About 50% of the nodes were affected.

The fault, however, resolved itself within a few minutes, according to a summary of the incident on Github. A full system restart was therefore not required. Block production was also only briefly affected. An exact cause could not be determined at this time.

According to a View post on X, the Cardano design accounts for such an incident. The rest of the network could therefore continue to operate despite the massive outage.

Blockchains regularly deal with outages due to technical glitches. In the past, Solana has especially had more trouble with this. A View post on X repeatedly emphasizes the importance of decentralization in a blockchain network.
