Crypto Liquidations Near $1 Billion as ETH Sell-Off Intensifies

Key Takeaways

  • In 24 hours, $942.1 million in leveraged positions were liquidated, with $863.3 million coming from longs.
  • Ethereum led the liquidations with $283.1 million, while Bitcoin recorded $196 million in liquidations.
  • The crypto market fell 4.96% to $2.76 trillion; Binance handled 53.7% of all liquidations.

Crypto traders saw $942.1 million (€842 million) in leveraged positions liquidated over the past 24 hours, with longs taking the biggest hit. According to Coinglass, $863.3 million (€771 million), or 91.6% of the total, came from long positions. The sell-off came alongside a broader drop in the crypto market, which fell 4.96% over the same period to $2.76 trillion (€2.5 trillion).

Ethereum Leads the Liquidations

Ethereum took the hardest hit among the biggest cryptocurrencies. The ETH price fell 5.31% in 24 hours to $2,373.87 (€2,120), the sharpest drop among the five largest cryptos by market value. Traders lost $283.1 million (€253 million) in ETH positions, of which more than $261 million (€233 million) came from longs.

Bitcoin followed with $196 million (€175 million) in liquidations. About $176 million (€157 million) of that came from long positions. BTC fell 2.54% over the same period to $81,328 (€72,600).

Biggest Hit in One Hour

Most of the liquidations happened in a short window. Coinglass recorded $489.4 million (€437 million) in liquidations in the most recent hour, more than half of the 24-hour total. That shows how quickly leveraged positions can get wiped out when the market moves sharply.

Binance handled 53.7% of all liquidations. On the crypto exchange, the biggest single order was also a BTCUSDT long worth $12.03 million (€10.7 million), which was closed at $80,208.96 (€71,600).

Broader Risk in the Market

The liquidations were not limited to crypto. On crypto exchanges, $22.1 million (€19.7 million) in silver positions and $13.3 million (€11.9 million) in gold positions were also liquidated. That fits a period where investors are more sensitive to macro news, like higher inflation and expectations around Federal Reserve interest rate policy.

For European crypto readers, this matters because liquidation waves like these often show how fragile leveraged trading is when the market turns fast. Binance's strong role also highlights how concentrated the unwinding of large positions still is.
