DogeOS Opens Testnet for Dogecoin DeFi and Stablecoins

The Ethereum-compatible testnet is meant to make DOGE usable for lending, trading, and a stablecoin. For now, it still runs through a permissioned layer outside the Dogecoin mainchain.

DogeOS Opens Testnet for Dogecoin DeFi and Stablecoins

Key Takeaways

  • DogeOS has opened a public testnet for Dogecoin applications like trading, lending, and a crypto-backed stablecoin.
  • The testnet is Ethereum-compatible and lets developers build apps with test DOGE for transaction fees.
  • Dogecoin does not have native smart contracts, so DogeOS runs apps through a separate system and users have to move DOGE over.

DogeOS has opened a public testnet that lets DOGE be used for trading, lending, and other Ethereum-style applications. With this, the project wants to give Dogecoin more uses than just payments and price speculation.

Testnet With DOGE

The network went live on Wednesday and is Ethereum-compatible, so developers can use familiar software to build apps. In the test version, users pay transaction fees with test DOGE, while projects work on lending services, trading platforms, and a crypto-backed stablecoin.

That is notable for Dogecoin, which was originally built mainly to move DOGE between wallets. The coin does not have native smart contracts, which means DeFi applications do not run directly on the mainchain. DogeOS therefore runs those apps on a separate system and lets users bring their DOGE there.

The development also fits into a broader shift within DeFi, where more and more trading is moving toward tokenized assets and other onchain products. Tokenized stocks recently pulled in extra capital in DeFi, showing that onchain markets are becoming broader than just crypto-native tokens.

Trust Still Comes First

That setup does mean users currently have to trust DogeOS's selected operators. The first version uses a permissioned sequencer, validators, and a trusted execution environment to process transactions and proofs. Dogecoin miners do not yet verify those application proofs themselves.

DogeOS wants to change that later with an upgrade for Dogecoin Core. The proposed change, OP_CHECKZKP, is meant to let computers on Dogecoin check whether calculations were carried out correctly elsewhere. The proposal was published in July 2025, and a separate implementation from December is still a draft.

Why This Matters

For European crypto investors, this shows how far projects are willing to go to make a memecoin more useful. Dogecoin does not have a native smart contract feature, so DeFi integration usually has to happen through extra layers or bridges, with added technical complexity and security risks. At the same time, Dogecoin remains an inflationary coin, with about 5 billion new DOGE created each year, which makes the need for real-world use cases even more relevant.
