ENS domain "ChatGPT" sold for $10,000

The domain changed hands on the virtual marketplace OpenSea for a five-figure US dollar price.

The domain changed hands on the virtual marketplace OpenSea for a five-figure US dollar price.

The ENS domain named "chatgpt.eth" was sold yesterday, Tuesday, February 7, on OpenSea for a price of six wrapped ETH. That was roughly $10,000 at the time of sale.

The address name was secured by someone who appears on the net under the name "ishmilly". In addition to ENS domains, the pseudonymous actor's collection also includes some pricey NFTs, including pieces from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).

Using ENS domains (Ethereum Name Service) lets users link names to an Ethereum address, for example. Just like a website domain, each name can only be claimed once.

Because of this relative scarcity, ENS domains on OpenSea can trade for millions. For instance, the address name "paradigm.eth" was sold for 420 wrapped ENS. At the time of purchase, that was roughly $1.5 million USD.
