Oxford City FC launches Bitcoin payments

Fans of Oxford City FC can now buy tickets, food, and drinks through the Bitcoin Lightning Network thanks to a partnership with CoinCorner. The plan is for fans to be able to buy tickets with Bitcoin seven days a week and also pay for food and drinks in BTC.

Oxford City FC is the first club in the National League (6th division) to offer Bitcoin payments. The pilot project will not be limited to Bitcoin as a payment method. They also want to boost public education about cryptocurrencies. "More than 3.3 million people in the United Kingdom now own digital currency - an increase of about a million people in just the past year," explains Justin Merritt, Oxford City FC’s head of football operations. "It's a real eye-opener to understand how important and accepted Bitcoin is in the modern digital era." CoinCorner's "Bolt" card, which can be used for crypto payments, also uses the Bitcoin Lightning Network. This enables payments to be made in seconds.

"The new normal in English football"

For the English football director, the latest step toward crypto is also beneficial for his club’s finances. "Using the latest technology and innovation helps Oxford City FC stay operating as an independent club. This is a key part of our long-term goals," Merritt says.

Merritt continues on adoption in football: "It's not mandatory for people to engage with our new technology, but we believe paying with Bitcoin will become the new normal in English football over time."

The sixth-tier club will play for the first time under the "Bitcoin Standard" on Saturday, August 6. The sponsor of the opening match is CoinCorner itself, though staff will also be on hand to explain more about the payment system and the technology itself.

Also in German football, clubs are steadily opening up to the crypto world. Bundesliga stars can be found in the play-to-earn game Sorare.
