France's third-biggest bank launches its own stablecoin

SG-Forge, the subsidiary of France's Société Générale, is launching its own stablecoin on the Ethereum network. This stablecoin will be pegged to the euro.

EUR CoinVertible is the name of SG-Forge's new stablecoin, a regulated subsidiary of the Société Générale group. The new coin, ticker EURCV, runs on the Ethereum blockchain and is pegged to the euro. The company announced this in a press release on April 20.

With the new product, the lender aims to bridge the gap between traditional capital markets and the digital asset ecosystem. Access to EUR CoinVertible is therefore limited to institutional investors admitted by the Société Générale Group.

MiCA EU regulation taken into account

In this regard, the new stablecoin is part of Société Générale's strategy to develop digital assets within a "safe and transparent framework for institutional investors" that is "fully compliant with banking and regulatory standards". EUR CoinVertible is also aligned with the upcoming European regulation on digital assets (MiCA).

In addition, the company ensures a "full separation" between the firm's funds and the stablecoin's funds. To reach as many users as possible, SG-Forge said it will work with "renowned digital asset exchanges" and "trusted third-party platforms".

Jean-Marc Stenger, Chief Executive Officer at SG-FORGE: "Stablecoins and other digital assets with stabilization mechanisms that fit the banking structure will be important to build trust in the domestic crypto ecosystem. Assets designed under the regulatory framework can help mainstream cryptocurrencies. The fear of institutional investors about engaging with the crypto sector will be reduced," Stenger said.
