Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the infamous Silk Road dark web marketplace, recently received a mysterious gift of 300 Bitcoin, worth about $31.4 million at market value. The crypto community smells trouble: could the donation come from Ulbricht's own digital vault?

The speculation isn't unfounded. Silk Road was one of the first platforms where Bitcoin was used as a payment method. According to an analysis by Coinbase researcher Conor Grogan from January this year, Ulbricht still owns about 450 BTC — plenty to make this "anonymous" donation himself.

When US authorities shut Silk Road down in 2013, the FBI seized nearly 300,000 Bitcoin in total. Almost half of that came from Ulbricht's personal wallets.

Ulbricht was initially sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole. Yet there was a surprising twist: shortly after taking office, former President Donald Trump granted him clemency by presidential decree. That freed Ulbricht early, stirring big controversy in both crypto and legal circles.

Whether he's the generous donor remains unclear for now. But one thing's for sure: the shadow of Silk Road still looms over the Bitcoin ecosystem.
