Lazarus Steals Crypto Funds to Fund Nuclear Weapons

The shadow fighters of Kim Jong-un team up in the Lazarus hacking group. The looted funds would flow toward the dictator's weapons of mass destruction.

Three years ago, the United Nations sounded the alarm in a report: the North Korean hacker group Lazarus funded Kim Jong-Un's nuclear weapons program with hundreds of millions of US dollars per year through its cyberattacks.

The cyber warriors have been wreaking havoc around the world for more than a decade. Their first attacks date back to 2009, and besides companies, banks and entire states, the crypto sector has recently increasingly become a target of the North Korean shadow army.

The Evil Mind on the Internet

According to the FBI, Lazarus is responsible for the worst hack in DeFi history to date. More than 625 million US dollars were stolen. The fighters of Kim Jong-un were also behind the recent $100 million attack on the Harmony crypto platform. In both hacks they exploited the same vulnerability—the protocol bridge. It enables easy transfers of cryptocurrencies. And it’s increasingly a target for hackers.
