Kazakhstan Sets Up Crypto Reserve

Kazakhstan is taking another solid step toward crypto integration. According to local media reports, the national central bank is working on establishing a state crypto reserve. Timur Suleimenov, head of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, confirmed this in response to a parliamentary inquiry.

Currently, a subsidiary of the central bank is studying how such a reserve could be set up. According to state agency Kazinform, this is based on an “institutionally solid approach,” inspired by “the best international practices for sovereign wealth fund management.”

The foundations of the reserve could consist of “unseizable crypto-assets,” Kazinform said. This puts Kazakhstan on a similar path to the United States, where under former President Trump work was done on both a Bitcoin reserve and a digital repository for altcoins.

Another potential source is cryptocurrencies mined by companies with state participation. The collaboration with law enforcement and other government agencies would help shape this model further.

This announcement doesn’t come out of nowhere. In recent months, the country rolled out several pro-crypto initiatives. For example, President Qassym-Shomart Toqajev announced at the Astana International Forum 2025 that a real “CryptoCity” is coming. Shortly before, Deputy Digital Minister Kanysh Tuleushin said Kazakhstan aims to position itself as the crypto hub of Central Asia.

Kazakhstan has long been a heavyweight in the world of crypto mining, and now it appears ready to take the lead on policy as well. An interesting note: at the end of May, neighboring Pakistan also announced plans for a national Bitcoin reserve, likewise funded with seized crypto assets.
