Kraken Launches Bitcoin and Ethereum Options for EEA Customers

Kraken is offering the derivatives through Kraken Pro and a CySEC-licensed MiFID broker, with cash settlement in USD and strict eligibility requirements.

Kraken Launches Bitcoin and Ethereum Options for EEA Customers

Key Takeaways

  • Kraken has made Bitcoin and Ethereum options available to eligible customers in the EEA through Kraken Pro and an existing Derivatives account.
  • The launch is built on Kraken's MiFID license; trading runs through Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited and custody through Payward Europe Solutions Limited.
  • The options are European-style, are cash-settled in dollars, require an eligibility questionnaire, and carry significant risks for sellers.

Kraken has opened trading in Bitcoin and Ethereum options to eligible customers in the European Economic Area. The products are available on Kraken Pro and run through an existing Derivatives account. For European crypto traders, that stands out because regulated crypto options trading is still rare in the region.

MiFID License as the Foundation

Kraken says the launch was made possible by its MiFID license. The company calls Europe a core focus and says this lets it offer options to EEA customers in a regulated venue. In the European crypto market, that matters because MiCA has applied in full across the EEA since July 1, 2026, and crypto exchanges therefore have to meet stricter requirements to stay legally active.

Two separate entities sit behind the product. Digital assets are held by Payward Europe Solutions Limited, Kraken's MiCA custodian. The options trading itself falls under Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited, which acts as the MiFID broker and is authorized by CySEC under license number 342/17.

How the Product Works

The options are European-style and are cash-settled in dollars. That means the premium, profit or loss, and settlement all run in USD. Kraken does not use an order book for this trading, but instead uses a request-for-quote system. A position can consist of up to five legs, and an accepted quote is binding.

Customers first have to fill out an eligibility questionnaire before trading is unlocked. Kraken also gives a clear warning about the risk: anyone who sells an option can face losses far above the margin posted and, in the worst case, even unlimited losses. Expiration dates are available weekly, monthly, quarterly, and semiannually.

Why This Matters in Europe

For Dutch and other European customers, this move shows that more complex crypto products are becoming available through licensed firms inside the EU. That could matter for professional users who are already used to derivatives markets outside Europe, but have had few regulated alternatives here. At the same time, the launch highlights how strict access and risk controls remain for products like these.
