Lead Bitcoin Core developer steps down

Marco Falke's contributions to the Bitcoin code are unmatched. He has more than 2,500 contributions on GitHub. As he announced yesterday, Tuesday, February 21, he is stepping down from his role as the maintainer of the original cryptocurrency.

Falke's main work included contributions to improving the efficiency of Bitcoin's test infrastructure. He also oversaw the quality control of new code. With Falke's departure, only four core maintainers remain on the Bitcoin core. In the past 18 months, four other people have already stepped down, citing legal risks or signs of burnout. Falke, for his part, did not discuss the reasons for his decision.

The contribution of core developers to the blockchain is certainly important. Thanks to decentralization, however, the Bitcoin network can operate without them. For example, any developer can submit suggestions to change the open-source code. What ultimately matters is always how many Bitcoin nodes accept the changes to the code.
