Lightning Labs: Protocol name "Taro" must be changed

There is a trademark dispute brewing in the open source world. Lightning Labs is therefore forced to change a protocol name.

The bitcoin infrastructure company Lightning Labs is being sued over the use of the name “Taro.” The plaintiff, Tari Labs, is a software development company focused on blockchain ecosystems. The court orders a name change because the names resemble each other too closely. Until then, further development of Taro is halted.

Tari Labs was founded in April 2020, and with that the trademark name "Tari" was registered. Two years later, Lightning Labs announced the Taro protocol. Tari Labs went to court because the two projects "are competitors in the same digital blockchain ecosystem, offer similar and in some cases identical goods and services, enter the market with similar developers and users, and appear on the same blockchain platforms." In the open source community, there was a lot of criticism of the lawsuit.

With Taro, Lightning Labs is working on a solution to send stablecoins over the Bitcoin network.
