Lucky miner hits Bitcoin block
Against all odds, a single Bitcoin miner managed to mine a block.
Against all odds, a single Bitcoin miner managed to mine a block. As a reward for his ‘hashpower’ (hashrate of 0.002%), the miner received 6.25 BTC, the equivalent of about 148,000 US dollars. This is all available in the block explorer: block explorer.
Normally, blocks are mined by so-called mining pools, where miners pool their resources. Still, we occasionally see lucky breaks like this, where a few miners produce a block. But because their combined hash power is much lower, the odds are especially slim.
As one user on Twitter wrote, events like this happen "about once every ten months" on average. Fun fact: the lucky miner only started work two days ago.
The miner used a solo mining service and posted a hashrate of about 6.7 PH/s. That was only 0.002 percent of the total network hashrate at the time the blocks were created.
