Mango Markets hacker arrested in Puerto Rico

The Mango Markets hacker responsible for stealing about $110 million in US dollars is in police custody. The charges are commodities fraud and commodity manipulation.

The Mango Markets DeFi protocol hacker, Avraham Eisenberg, was arrested on Monday, December 26, in Puerto Rico. This is according to a related court document.

Specifically it states: "Eisenberg participated in a scheme in which the price of open-ended futures contracts on the Mango Markets crypto exchange was deliberately and artificially manipulated." FBI Special Agent Brandon Racz asserts in the document that Eisenberg "deliberately and knowingly" manipulated the sale of the commodity.

The charges come down to commodities fraud and commodity manipulation, per the filing. According to the document, the offender faces a "fine or imprisonment." In mid-October, Eisenberg used the DeFi protocol to pull roughly $110 million in the form of the exchange token MNGO.

After a vote in which he used the stolen funds as governance tokens, Eisenberg sought to avoid prosecution. He could now become the first American citizen to stand trial for his role in manipulating a DeFi platform.
