Is Microsoft About to Invest in Bitcoin Soon?

During the upcoming shareholder meeting on December 10, there will be a vote on a possible Bitcoin investment. This comes from a request filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In the request, it states: “In times of persistent and often rising inflation, a company’s financial strength is judged not only on its business performance but also on how well it preserves its profits.”
Companies that “invest their capital wisely” can, according to the proposal, “often grow the company’s value faster than more profitable firms that do not do so.” Bitcoin is seen as “the best protection against inflation.”
As an example, the report cites MicroStrategy stock, which this year performed more than 300% better than Microsoft stock, “even though the company generates only a fraction of Microsoft’s revenue.” MicroStrategy has a substantial Bitcoin investment.
However, the Microsoft board has already indicated it is opposed to the proposal. Microsoft says it has “carefully considered this matter.” The company has “evaluated several investable assets,” including assets that are expected to offer diversification and inflation protection and reduce the risk of significant losses from rising interest rates.
In earlier reviews, “Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies” were also considered. Microsoft will continue to follow trends and developments in the crypto world for future decisions. Still, the board notes that volatility is “an important factor in evaluating cryptocurrency investments for corporate purposes.” An additional “public review” is considered “unwarranted.”
