Microsoft earlier this month updated its terms of service to ban cryptomining without written consent. The update applies to all users, including Microsoft’s paying customers. According to the update, it mainly affects the Cloud platform Azure. The updated universal license terms say: "Neither the Customer nor those who access an Online Service through the Customer may use an Online Service to mine cryptocurrency without the prior written permission of Microsoft." It added: "Violations of the acceptable use policy in this section may lead to suspension of the online service."
Reason still unclear
Microsoft’s move follows other tech giants Google and Amazon Web Services, which also ban mining. The reason for the update remains unclear so far. A commonly discussed issue is the enormous energy consumption associated with cryptocurrency mining. While Microsoft opposes crypto mining, the tech giant has big plans for the Metaverse.
