Peter Thiel starts crypto bank “Erebor”

The tech and crypto scene watches a new chapter in the American banking sector: tech visionary Peter Thiel, virtual-reality pioneer Palmer Luckey, and Palantir cofounder Joe Lonsdale are launching a fully digital bank under the name “Erebor”. That reports the Financial Times.

With this move, the trio is filling the gap created by the 2023 collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Erebor aims to grow into a modern SVB alternative with a clear focus on crypto.

The founders had already filed their application for a national banking license with the OCC in June, kicking off the formal licensing process. Approval is not expected before 2026 at the earliest.

Columbus, Ohio was chosen as the headquarters, complemented by a sleek office in New York. With an initial capital of $225 million and a reported pre-money valuation of $2 billion, Erebor sets the bar high for new banks.

The business model includes traditional business accounts, credit lines, and cash management, but goes further: stablecoins will not only be held, but also actively booked on the balance sheet.

That positions Erebor as possibly the “most tightly regulated stablecoin bank in the U.S.” — a clear signal to institutional crypto investors who have so far operated largely in a legal gray area.

Beyond crypto, Erebor targets startups in artificial intelligence, defense tech, and high-risk manufacturing, areas where traditional big banks often don’t want to touch.

The Tolkien-esque name Erebor, referring to the Lonely Mountain full of dwarf gold, is meant to evoke stability and value, a proven branding move within Thiel’s business empire. Luckey’s defense company Anduril is also a nod to Lord of the Rings.
