Schroders Brings Bond Fund to Solana via Centrifuge

The asset manager is moving its emerging markets debt strategy onchain via Centrifuge, with Solana as the infrastructure. It follows earlier tokenized products and fits into the growth of RWAs.

Schroders Brings Bond Fund to Solana via Centrifuge

Key Takeaways

  • Schroders is moving its emerging markets bond strategy onchain through Centrifuge and using Solana for it.
  • Investors hold tokenized shares in a feeder fund that invests in Schroders' underlying bond fund.
  • The move fits into a broader shift in tokenization toward more complex investment products alongside cash-like funds.

Schroders is moving its emerging markets bond strategy onchain through tokenization specialist Centrifuge and using Solana for it. This is the first time the asset manager has rolled out this strategy on that blockchain. Investors can hold tokenized shares in a feeder fund that invests in Schroders' underlying bond fund, with the value tracking net asset value.

First Step on Solana

Schroders is a London-based asset manager with a history of more than 200 years and managed $1.1 trillion (€1 trillion) in assets in June. With this setup, the company is taking its move into tokenized investments a step further, after already experimenting with tokenized products earlier. In August, Schroders got approval in Ireland for its first tokenized class of a dollar money market fund, under the name Schroders Onchain Active Returns.

The strategy now coming to Solana invests in debt securities from governments and companies in emerging economies. That gives investors exposure to markets and currencies outside the US and Europe. Schroders says it has been managing emerging markets debt for more than 50 years and has more than 40 investment professionals working on it.

Tokenization Expands

The move fits into a broader trend where large asset managers are no longer using tokenization only for cash-like products. Tokenized US Treasuries and money market funds have so far made up most of the market, but the focus is now also shifting to more complex investment instruments like emerging markets bonds. According to RWA.xyz, those cash-like products still account for $14 billion (€12.5 billion) of a total tokenized real-world asset market of $39 billion (€34.9 billion).

Centrifuge plays a central role in that. The platform says it has processed more than $750 million (€671 million) in tokenized assets and provides the infrastructure to issue and manage those assets. For European crypto followers, this matters because it shows how blockchain is being used more and more in traditional financial products, not just in the crypto market itself but also in institutional investment structures. The growth of tokenized assets on Solana also shows that institutional players are increasingly using the network for onchain capital markets.

Why This Matters for Crypto

Solana is chosen more often in projects like this because the network is fast and has low transaction costs. That makes it practical for products that need lots of transactions or transfers of tokenized shares. The development also shows that institutional interest in blockchain infrastructure is growing further, as not only cash products but also actively managed strategies are being put onchain.
