Solana network back online after outage

After a failed software update, an outage on the blockchain occurred that could only be fixed after two restarts.

After a outage in the Solana network on Saturday evening, February 25, the blockchain is back online and fully functional. During a software update, several forks reportedly happened Sunday evening, causing a severe slowdown of the blockchain.

Individual nodes meanwhile switched to an older software version to fix the issue, but to no avail. It wasn’t until two restarts that the network was back up. Since not all validators are back online yet, staking rewards may fail in some places right now.

As a result, the price of the cryptocurrency briefly slid to $21.50 before it partly recovered, and is now trading around $23.

Unfortunately, the latest disruption isn’t an isolated case. Solana has repeatedly faced outages in the past, drawing heavy criticism. The network's decentralization has also been questioned after these events.

In response, Solana supporters often point out that the blockchain is still in beta testing, so outages can’t be ruled out.

Meanwhile, other blockchains have also faced network disruptions from time to time, most recently Cardano. After a January incident, about 60% of the nodes were offline. A blockchain restart, however, was not required.
