UBS is acquiring Credit Suisse. It’s one of the biggest bank mergers since the financial crisis—and Bitcoin is benefiting.
Last Sunday, the big Swiss bank UBS Group AG acquired its struggling rival Credit Suisse for about $3.2 billion.
It’s one of the biggest bank mergers since the financial crisis 15 years ago. The takeover creates one of the world’s largest financial services providers. According to a statement, assets under management exceed $5 trillion. Ralph Hamers, UBS’s CEO, explains:
'The combination of UBS and Credit Suisse will build on UBS’s strengths and expand our ability to serve clients worldwide.'
Shortly after the takeover, BTC jumped to over $28,000. The announcement sparked short-term euphoria in the crypto market. In the long run, it remains to be seen how a potential UBS Bank crypto strategy will affect the crypto market.
Meanwhile, both Swiss financial institutions are well known in the crypto sector. While UBS has already issued its first bonds on the blockchain, Credit Suisse recently invested in Taurus, a crypto platform for banks.
Justin Sun wanted to buy Credit Suisse
Before the takeover, Tron founder Justin Sun tweeted that he was interested in Credit Suisse: Sun would be willing to pay about $1.5 billion to acquire the bank.
With the Credit Suisse takeover, he wanted to pave the way for a more innovative and decentralized financial system. "As we move toward a more digitized and decentralized future, it’s crucial that traditional financial institutions adapt and evolve to meet the needs of their customers," said the 32-year-old.
Credit Suisse: Victim of the banking crisis
Credit Suisse shares have fallen almost 75% over the past month. After another double-digit sell-off, trading was halted.
The collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the U.S. led to uncertainty in the financial sector and at Credit Suisse. On top of that, the bank posted a loss of about $8 billion for the year.
