On December 16 and 17, wallets from the defunct crypto exchange QuadrigaCX moved Bitcoin worth $1.7 million. This was reported by "On-chain sleuth" View post on X on Twitter. According to him, a total of 104 BTC were moved from five addresses in total. About 69 BTC were sent via the Wasabi coin mixer.
Four of the mentioned addresses had not moved any funds since February 2019, shortly before QuadrigaCX's bankruptcy proceedings. Magdalena Gronowska, QuadrigaCX's bankruptcy administrator, confirmed to CoinDesk that the holdings were not moved by her. "We are working to gather more information, and I hope we can recover the stolen funds," Gronowska said. Who might be responsible for the Bitcoin transaction is still unclear.
When QuadrigaCX founder Gerrald Cotten suddenly died in December 2018, the private keys to the wallets went to his grave. This prevented customers' cryptocurrencies from being paid out to their rightful owners. Rumors about Gerrald's death still swirl today. There is even a Netflix documentary made about the story behind the crypto assets that Cotten presumably took to his grave.
