Bitcoin mining doesn't have to be harmful to the climate. On the contrary: crypto mining can help with the energy transition.

Ecological sustainability only works if it's economically viable. The government can bridge teething problems and shortages, but at some point a system has to sustain itself, or risk an economic crash. That's exactly the challenge we face in Europe, where the energy transition project is gobbling up hundreds of billions of euros. Every chance to boost the economic viability of renewables like wind, hydro, or solar should be welcomed. Because it brings us a step closer to CO2-neutrality.

The problem with renewable energy grids

A challenge with renewable energy sources is that they, unlike coal or nuclear power, are very volatile. There are several factors that determine how much energy is produced: sometimes winds pick up, sometimes the sun shines less.

To power the whole country with sustainable energy that also guarantees demand even when output is low, we need so many wind and solar plants that overproduction of energy becomes common. To avoid overloading the grids, buyers for the electricity have to be found. Of course, work is already underway to improve energy storage systems, but that development takes time. So other ways and tools are needed to reduce grid overloading.

Bitcoin mining as a flexible solution

This is exactly where energy-intensive Bitcoin mining comes into play. Because mining systems are highly flexible since they can be turned on and off. They can act as spontaneous consumers for overproduction. That would not only make grid use better controlled, but renewables could become profitable faster through cross-financing via Bitcoin.

Criticism of Bitcoin

The biggest hurdle for Bitcoin probably lies less in the technical implementation and more in ideological biases against Bitcoin mining. There have already been various calls, especially from left-leaning and green circles, to ban the tech altogether, because mining crypto is seen as evil and climate-destroying. So even if the climate-protective Bitcoin mining arguments are clear, it's still unlikely that the realization that mining can cut our CO2 footprint will win out.

But blockchain tech can also make a decisive contribution to the energy transition independent of Bitcoin mining.

Whether it's through tokenizing CO2 certificates or peer-to-peer billing systems for decentralized energy networks like EV charging stations. It’s no surprise that the blockchain space uses the term "Regenerative Finance", or ReFi for short.
