There is currently a proposal circulating aimed at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This proposal shows how XRP could unlock trillions of US dollars.
According to a recent document, XRP could help unlock huge amounts of liquidity in the United States. The SEC's Crypto Task Force published a five-page proposal stating that an estimated 5 trillion dollars are tied up in so-called Nostro accounts.
These accounts are mainly used for international payments, according to Maximilian Staudinger, the author of the study. He suggests the U.S. could benefit from integrating XRP into the national payments network.
According to Staudinger, mobilizing just a third of these funds through the efficiency of the XRP payment system could free up 1.5 trillion dollars for banks. This could have a significant impact on liquidity within the financial system.
Where these figures come from exactly is unclear. An initial study suggests that the data may originate from a McKinsey study from 2016, which Ripple cited on their website in 2018 as liquidity explained.
To make this plan a reality, however, there would first need to be more regulatory clarity. The legal fight between Ripple and the SEC would have to end before XRP can be broadly integrated into the U.S. financial system. Additionally, the U.S. government would need to launch a pilot program for XRP, and eventually banks would have to widely adopt XRP as an alternative to Nostro accounts.
Although this proposal has a lot of potential, it remains speculative for now until concrete steps are taken in the regulatory and financial sectors.
