24h Volume
24h Volume is the total amount of crypto traded in the past 24 hours. It shows how much trading activity there was during that period.
What Is 24h Volume?
The figure can refer to a single cryptocurrency, a trading pair, or an entire crypto exchange. One example of a trading pair is BTC/EUR: bitcoin bought and sold for euros.
24h Volume can be shown in crypto, such as 10 BTC, or as a monetary value, such as euros. For a rolling figure, transactions from more than 24 hours ago are no longer included.
Each completed buy or sell counts once. The same bitcoin can be sold multiple times and count multiple times. So, volume doesn't show how many unique coins have changed hands.
An Example of 24h Volume
Suppose a total of 10 bitcoin is traded on the BTC/EUR market over 24 hours. At an average price of €50,000 per bitcoin, 24h Volume is 10 BTC, or €500,000.
Even if the same bitcoin is resold several times that day, each transaction counts. So, volume is the sum of all trading activity.
Why Is 24h Volume Important in Crypto?
Crypto news often reports 24h Volume alongside a price increase or decrease. This helps you see whether a price movement is happening alongside more or less trading activity. The figure alone doesn't predict whether the price will keep rising or fall further.
Don't confuse volume with market cap. Market cap is the price of a cryptocurrency multiplied by its circulating supply. Volume measures only the trading that takes place during a certain period.
High volume also doesn't automatically mean you can place a large order without significantly changing the price. That requires enough liquidity: enough buy and sell orders available. Also check whether a provider measures spot transactions, derivatives trading, or both. Volume figures can vary by provider and may be distorted by artificial trading.
