Base
Base is a Layer 2 network for Ethereum. It processes transactions off the Ethereum network itself, often at a lower cost.
What is Base?
Base was developed by Coinbase. It’s a network, not a separate cryptocurrency.
Base collects transactions and then posts the data to Ethereum. This spreads Ethereum’s costs across multiple transactions. Base uses a rollup, a way to process transactions off Ethereum first.
A sequencer puts transactions in the right order and often provides a quick initial confirmation. Final settlement happens through Ethereum. You need ETH on Base to pay fees there.
An example of using Base
Someone sends ETH from Ethereum to Base using a bridge. A bridge connects networks and lets you move supported assets between them.
That person can then swap tokens in a trading app on Base. Transaction fees are paid with ETH on Base. Both the bridge transfer and the swap may have fees.
Why is Base important in crypto?
Base helps Ethereum process more transactions. That’s why Base comes up in news about trading apps, stablecoins, NFTs and other applications on the network.
Lower fees don’t mean transactions are free. Fees can change depending on network activity and the processing required.
A token or application on Base also isn’t automatically trustworthy or approved by Coinbase. Bugs in smart contracts and fraud remain possible risks. When sending assets back to Ethereum, the standard bridge may also involve a delay.
