Custodial wallet
A custodial wallet is a crypto wallet where a company holds your crypto on your behalf. The company also stores your private keys: the secret access codes to your crypto.
What is a custodial wallet?
You often get a custodial wallet when you open an account with a crypto exchange or crypto broker. You log in with your account details, just like with online banking. The provider handles the technical side and carries out transactions for you on the blockchain, a digital record of transactions.
You don’t have to store a seed phrase yourself. A seed phrase is a series of words you can usually use to recover a wallet. If you lose your password, you can often reset it by email or through customer support. Additional security features, such as 2FA, may also be available.
The trade-off is that you don’t have full control yourself. The provider manages the private keys, so you’re trusting that it will keep your crypto safe.
An example of a custodial wallet
Imagine you buy crypto through a platform and create an account. The platform automatically creates a wallet for you. You can see your balance and buy, receive, or send crypto.
You don’t receive secret recovery words, and you don’t have to store them. If you forget your password, the platform can usually help you log in again. This is a custodial wallet because the platform manages the private keys.
Why are custodial wallets important in crypto?
Custodial wallets make crypto easier to use, especially for beginners. You don’t have to make backups or store secret access codes yourself. There’s also often support available if you can’t log in.
You may come across the term in news about crypto exchanges, crypto brokers, or security. In those cases, it’s important to know that a provider manages access to the crypto. That’s why the provider’s security and reliability matter.
A custodial wallet doesn’t mean you own the private keys yourself. If you want that control, you’re looking for a non-custodial wallet. With one, you’re responsible for security and could lose your crypto if you lose your seed phrase.
