Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)
An Ethereum Improvement Proposal, usually shortened to EIP, is a public proposal to change or improve Ethereum. It can be a small fix for a problem or a major update.
What is an Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)?
Developers can submit an EIP when they have an idea for Ethereum. The Ethereum community can then review and discuss the proposal.
Before an EIP is implemented, it must be approved and thoroughly tested. This makes changes to Ethereum visible to everyone, rather than leaving them up to a single party.
There are several types of EIPs. Some change the network’s basic rules. Others describe a standard for tokens, apps, or smart contracts: programs that automatically carry out agreements on Ethereum.
An example of an EIP
EIP-1559 changed how Ethereum calculates transaction fees. A transaction fee is the amount you pay to have a transaction processed on the network.
This EIP introduced a standard base fee that adjusts based on how busy the network is. If you want a transaction to be processed faster, you can pay an additional amount on top of it. This example shows how an EIP can affect the way people use Ethereum.
Why are EIPs important in crypto?
EIPs are the established process through which Ethereum continues to develop. They explain what is changing, why the change is needed, and how it should be implemented. They also provide a public record of past changes.
You’ll often see EIP numbers in news about an Ethereum upgrade. These numbers refer to individual proposals that may be included in an upgrade. So a major update can include several EIPs at once.
An EIP is not automatically an implemented change. It starts as a proposal and is discussed and tested first. So news about a new EIP doesn’t necessarily mean Ethereum will change right away or that the price of ETH will move.
