Genesis Block
The Genesis Block is the very first block of Bitcoin. It’s block 0 and the starting point of the entire Bitcoin blockchain.
What is the Genesis Block?
Satoshi Nakamoto created the Genesis Block on January 3, 2009. A blockchain is a series of blocks containing data. Each new Bitcoin block builds on an earlier block.
The Genesis Block is different because there’s no block before it. It was manually included in the Bitcoin software as a fixed starting point.
The data includes text from a British newspaper headline about bank bailouts. That text also shows that the block couldn’t have been created before that date.
An example of the Genesis Block
Think of the Bitcoin blockchain as a book with numbered pages. The Genesis Block is the first page. Without it, the book can’t begin.
The reward for this first block was 50 bitcoin. Because of the special way the block was created, these bitcoin can never be moved or spent.
Why is the Genesis Block important in crypto?
The Genesis Block is the technical foundation of Bitcoin. All the blocks that came later ultimately build on this first block.
You’ll mostly see the term in explanations of Bitcoin’s history and technology. The message in the block is often seen as criticism of the traditional financial system and bank bailouts.
The Genesis Block is unique. That doesn’t mean every block reward is locked: miners can normally use rewards from later Bitcoin blocks.
