HODL
HODL means holding onto your crypto instead of selling, even when the price drops. The word started as a typo of the English word “hold.”
What is HODL?
People who HODL buy crypto and then hold onto it for a longer period. The idea is to avoid trading all the time or selling quickly out of fear.
The term originated in 2013 in a post on a Bitcoin forum. The writer meant to say “holding” but wrote “hodling.” The typo became a well-known crypto expression.
HODL doesn’t protect you from losses. The price can fall and stay low for a long time. So, if you hold onto crypto, you can still lose money.
An example of HODL
Someone buys Bitcoin and then sees the price drop. Instead of selling right away, that person holds onto the Bitcoin.
That’s HODL: not reacting to every price move, but keeping the crypto. There’s no guarantee that this will work out well.
Why is HODL important in crypto?
The crypto market can be very volatile. That’s why you often see HODL in posts about falling prices, a crypto crash, or a lot of market uncertainty.
When people say they’re HODLing, they usually mean they aren’t selling despite those price swings. It doesn’t mean the price is sure to rise again.
HODL is also a well-known expression in the crypto community. It doesn’t guarantee a profit and isn’t a substitute for doing your own research.
