Seedless wallet
A seedless wallet is a crypto wallet that doesn’t require you to store a seed phrase with recovery words. Access and recovery work differently instead.
What is a seedless wallet?
With many wallets, you get a set of recovery words. You can use them to restore your wallet if you lose your phone. With a seedless wallet, you don’t have to write down and store those words yourself.
The wallet still uses cryptographic keys to approve transactions. These are secret pieces of digital data that prove you’re authorizing a transaction. Recovery might work through a second device, designated recovery contacts, or a process managed by the provider.
Your crypto isn’t literally stored in the wallet app. The wallet gives you access to your crypto on the blockchain. Exactly how a seedless wallet works depends on the provider.
An example of a seedless wallet
Suppose two out of three keys are needed to access the wallet. One key is on your phone, one is on a separate recovery device, and one is held by a trusted recovery contact.
What if you lose your phone? The recovery device and recovery contact can work together to authorize a new key. You don’t need recovery words for this.
Why are seedless wallets important in crypto?
Seedless wallets aim to make crypto easier for beginners to use. You don’t have to keep a long series of words safe. That’s why the term comes up in discussions about wallet security, user-friendly crypto apps, and new ways to approve transactions.
Not having a seed phrase doesn’t automatically make a wallet more secure. You can still lose access if you lose the necessary devices, accounts, or recovery methods. Attackers may also try to take over recovery accounts, devices, or recovery contacts.
An easy sign-in process also doesn’t automatically tell you who has control. With some wallets, a provider may be involved in recovery. So check the specific rules: who can approve transactions, who can block recovery, and whether you can easily move the wallet to other software?
