Web3
Web3 is an idea for a new generation of the internet. Its goal is to give users more control over their data, digital identity, and digital assets.
What is Web3?
On the internet many people use today, large platforms often manage accounts and user data. Web3 aims to make users less dependent on these central organizations.
Web3 often uses blockchain technology. This is a shared digital record where data and transactions can be recorded. Smart contracts are also used: programs that automatically carry out agreements.
For example, you can use a crypto wallet to log in to a Web3 app and manage digital assets. You then have significant responsibility for access to that wallet.
An example of Web3
Imagine posting a video on a Web3 platform. The record of your digital ownership can be stored on a blockchain. You can then decide whether to offer the video and possibly receive tokens.
This illustrates the idea behind Web3: one platform doesn't manage everything; instead, users have more say. In practice, this varies from app to platform.
Why is Web3 important in crypto?
Web3 is closely connected to crypto because blockchains, tokens, and crypto wallets often form its foundation. dApps, or decentralized apps, and NFTs are also often called Web3 applications.
In crypto news, you may come across Web3 in stories about new apps, projects starting a DAO, or developments in digital identity. These stories usually involve applications that aim to give users more ownership or control.
Web3 doesn't automatically mean an app is safe, private, or easy to use. The technology is still young and can be complicated. Errors in smart contracts, scams, and hacks remain possible risks.
