What was greeted last year with huge excitement now feels commonplace: there is a new Bitcoin futures ETF launching. When will the physical ETF arrive?
On September 15, the new Hashdex Bitcoin futures ETF, ticker DEFI, went live. Bloomberg reports. Like earlier Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S., this one is based on futures contracts. In other words, instead of real coins, only derivatives are traded.
Physically backed Bitcoin ETFs (spot ETFs) in the U.S. are seen as the holy grail by many investors. Once released, large institutional money could flow into the cryptocurrency.
The SEC has, so far, blocked such a release, repeatedly citing regulatory concerns. Most recently with the VanEck Bitcoin ETF application.
According to the report, the details of the new futures ETF mask the hope for a physical exchange-traded fund. The filing falls under a different securities law than its predecessors.
