Bitcoin Volatility Falls to 2.5-Year Low

The tightest Bollinger Bands since early 2024 point to an approaching breakout, with $80,000 as key support and $85,000 as the first resistance.

Bitcoin Volatility Falls to 2.5-Year Low

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin is trading around $82,538, while the Bollinger Bands have fallen back to their tightest level in 2.5 years.
  • The area around $80,000 is key support; below that are $79,033, $77,876, and possibly $73,000 to $75,000.
  • If Bitcoin closes above $85,000 for the day, the analysis says it could rise to $87,000 and possibly $89,358.

Bitcoin has been moving unusually quietly for days, even as the market expects a sharp breakout. BTC’s Bollinger Bands have fallen back to their tightest level in 2.5 years. That makes the area around $80,000 (€71,300) especially important for the next price move.

Tightest Band Since 2024

BTC is trading around $82,538 (€73,500), up 0.92% in 24 hours. According to Barchart, the Bollinger Bands are now only $5,368 (€4,780) apart, equal to about 6.5% of the Bitcoin price. That is one of the smallest gaps since early 2024 and points to a period of low volatility.

That calm stands out after a week in which global markets were shaky again. Even after the recent sell-off in tech stocks and oil prices above $100 (€89), Bitcoin still closed the week above $82,000 (€73,100). At the same time, trading volume has weakened since June, showing that buyers have not yet come back convincingly.

Previous Squeezes Led to Big Moves

The current setup brings back memories of earlier moments when Bitcoin seemed stuck for a long time and then moved hard. In May, a similar squeeze around $82,000 (€73,100) was followed by a drop of nearly 30% to below $58,000 (€51,700). Three months later, another tight phase around $63,000 (€56,100) led to a rise of more than 35% toward $87,000 (€77,500).

Analyst Ted Pillows therefore calls $80,000 (€71,300) a crucial support level. That level acted as resistance in May and is now once again the point where the market can choose its direction. Below $80,000 (€71,300), support first comes into view around $79,033 (€70,400) and $77,876 (€69,400). If the breakdown is weak, the price could fall further to around $73,000 (€65,000) to $75,000 (€66,800).

On the upside, $85,000 (€75,700) is the first major level to watch. A daily close above that level, preferably with more volume, could open the door to $87,000 (€77,500) and possibly $89,358 (€79,600).

Why This Matters for Investors

For European crypto investors, this is especially relevant because Bitcoin often sets the tone for the rest of the crypto market. A period of low volatility can end suddenly, and previous squeezes showed that moves can get big fast. Another factor is that more than 71% of the Bitcoin supply is now in profit, close to the historical average that often lines up with a shift between a bear market and a bull market.

Institutional demand could also play a role here: new purchases by Strive and Strategy showed that big players become active again during a recovery above $82,000 (€73,100).
