Sorare blockchain game lands Premier League licensing rights

The Premier League makes its debut in Sorare. This means four of the five top football leagues are now fully represented in the blockchain game.

The Premier League makes its debut on the digital field. As Sorare announced in a press release, the Paris-based crypto startup will integrate the digital trading cards of all players in the English Premier League. The partnership initially runs for four years. Platform users will be able to trade NFT cards of Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, or Mohamed Salah and pit them against each other in competitions. In addition, Sorare is introducing new gameplay features.

A dream come true

The collaboration has been a dream since the company was founded, says Nicolas Julia, CEO of Sorare. The partnership is a milestone, the 36-year-old adds. The Premier League is the most expansive and financially powerful football league in the world. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, English top sport drew an average of 1.9 million viewers per match in the UK alone. The collaboration with Sorare is meant to deepen the digital connection with fans, says Richard Masters, the Premier League's chief executive.

In addition to English top-flight football, Sorare has licensing rights for the Bundesliga, Italy's Serie A, Spain's La Liga and 15 teams in France's Ligue 1.

What is Sorare?

Sorare is basically the digital equivalent of a Panini sticker album. The game is built on scarcity. Each NFT football card comes in four different versions ("Limited", "Rare", "Super Rare", "Unique"). The rarer a card, the higher the price. Also, players' actual on-field performance further affects the market value.

Besides collecting and trading, managers can pit their teams against each other. For every win, points are awarded. The higher your score at the end of a tournament, the better the prizes you can win. Instructions for setting up your first team can be found here.
