Cardano: Vasil finally gets an official launch signal

On September 22, Cardano will get its most important update yet. This was announced by the developer

The Vasil hard fork for Cardano is ready for launch on the mainnet. This was confirmed by the blockchain IOHK developers in a tweet on September 2. The long-awaited update is slated to go live on September 22. Originally, the launch was planned for June 29, but it had to be postponed due to serious shortcomings.

The rollout of the version named "Vasil" is the biggest upgrade for the Cardano blockchain since the Alonzo hard fork in September 2021. It’s designed to scale the blockchain and guarantee higher transaction speeds. This should give a huge boost to Cardano’s applications, which are currently running quite slowly.

With a little over $80 million in total value locked, Cardano has so far been a sideshow compared to other blockchains. Cardano is viewed by some in the crypto space as a serious rival to the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum itself is gearing up for a major change with the upcoming merge on September 13, which has generated a lot of hype so far. As a result, Cardano has been somewhat overshadowed lately by the second-largest blockchain and has received less attention. With the latest upgrade, founder Charles Hoskinson’s project gets another chance to position itself at the forefront of smart contract platforms.

Hoskinson also confirmed the date for the hard fork in a video update. In it, he discussed its scale and explained that they would be conducting what could be the "heaviest update" in Cardano’s history with Vasil. This shows Cardano staying true to its creed of rigorous and extensive testing before major improvements.

If the change is successful, it would pave the way for scalable DeFi apps on Cardano. That could attract new users, boosting demand for ADA.
