It looks like a wallet managed by U.S. authorities has been hacked. This is being reported by View post on X based on on-chain data. In total, about $20 million in crypto assets were stolen from the address. It’s likely seized funds linked to a hack on crypto exchange Bitfinex a few years ago. The exact details aren’t clear yet. According to Arkham Intelligence, "the attacker has already started laundering the proceeds through suspicious addresses tied to a money-laundering service."
The Bitfinex hack grabbed global attention. In 2016 the crypto exchange was hacked, and roughly $4 billion worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen. In 2022, researchers tracked down a couple as they tried to launder the funds. The trials against Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan begin in November.
