The crypto lobby group Coin Center is taking legal action against the ban on the Tornado Cash crypto mixer. The pushback against the sanctions is growing louder.

The lawsuit targets the Foreign Asset Control (OFAC)

The Coin Center has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of the Treasury for banning the controversial Tornado Cash mixer. The group announced this in a press release. The complaint is specifically aimed at the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), which in August instituted a de facto ban on the Tornado Cash mixer. In their lawsuit, Coin Center argues that OFAC exceeded its legal powers with the ban and acted unlawfully and unconstitutionally.

Coinbase also sues the U.S. Department of the Treasury

Shortly after the ban was announced, the lobby group said it would take legal action against OFAC's ban. In a View post on X, the executive director of Coin Center said he would bring the case to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary. The Tornado Cash ban sparked a debate in the crypto scene about free speech and privacy in the sector. Some saw it as a clear instance of regulator arbitrariness. In the meantime, the American crypto exchange Coinbase has recently also sued the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
