DeFi TVL tops $40 billion

Total Value Locked (TVL) in the DeFi sector has risen above $40 billion for the first time since mid-December 2022.

The reason for the rise: the price rally at the start of the week. As Bitcoin managed to push past the $17,000 mark, many smart contract platforms in the top 20 by market cap also posted big gains. Additionally, all five of the top smart contract assets posted double-digit peaks over the past seven days.

TVL on DeFi platforms grew in tandem, according to DeFi-Llama. Lido Finance is now in first place with $6.56 billion in TVL, while MakerDAO lags a bit. With more than 50 percent of total TVL, Ethereum still holds the top spot. At its peak, DeFi TVL was just under $200 billion.

After a mixed year, 2022 starts 2023 with optimism. Regulation will play in the coming months.
