Indonesia rewrites crypto regulations

Indonesia wants to reframe the laws and regulations around crypto. According to Bloomberg, Indonesia's watchdog Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency of Indonesia (Bappebti) is handing its jurisdiction over cryptocurrencies to the Financial Services Authority (FSA), a securities-focused agency.

The FSA (Financial Services Authority) will take over crypto asset oversight over the next two years, according to Didid Noordiatmoko, the acting head of Bappebti. As part of the regulation, a national exchange will also be established. The launch is planned for later this year.

The Indonesian Ministry of Finance said the transfer to the FSA was rooted in valuing crypto assets as securities.

"Crypto assets have evolved into investment and financial instruments and should therefore be regulated the same way as other financial and investment instruments," the ministry said in this context.

This expands Indonesia's infrastructure in digital assets even further. At the same time, the country is accelerating the development of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
