A historic moment for some, a reason for early morning drinks for others: Here's how Twitter is celebrating the Ethereum Merge.
After years of prep, several testnets, a few hiccups, and multiple delays, Ethereum today completed the painful shift from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake: The merge is wrapped up. On Twitter, the event is being celebrated with gusto.
"An amazing moment for the Ethereum ecosystem".
Ethereum lead developer Vitalik Buterin used the merge to thank everyone: "Congratulations on the merge. Everyone who made the Merge possible should be very proud today." The Merge was "a big moment for the Ethereum ecosystem," the crypto figure added, with a touch of sentiment. But this isn’t just a new chapter for Ethereum. The merge is expected to reduce global electricity consumption by 0.2 percent, Buterin added View post on X.
"Holy Shit"
Not less enthusiastic, but a bit more specific in his wording, was Tim Beiko. "We’re ready. It’s done. We’re merged. Holy shit," the Ethereum developer replied to the historic moment, almost as if he was surprised by it himself. Beiko also joined the celebrations on Twitter: "Great work by everyone".
"Proof of Stake Ethereum is here!"
Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin had beforehand said the merge would be the third most important event in the history of blockchain and crypto. Accordingly, ConsenSys CEO thanked the Ether community on the short message platform: "Congratulations to the whole community. And to the developers, client teams, researchers, and educators for their commitment to this milestone."
"I like to drink champagne at 8 o’clock."
Meanwhile, View post on X was cheerier. The Ethereum developer popped the champagne during the Merge — and seemed to enjoy the sparkling wine in the early morning: "I should do this more often," Edgington quipped.
Edgington also posted View post on X about all the team: "To an incredible community of researchers, client developers, testers, devops, solo stakers, node operators, writers, podcasters and everyone else." With the Merge, they have "achieved something monumental today."

For Bankless founder Ryan Adams, Ethereum made history with the Merge on September 15, and not just for crypto: "A historic day for crypto. A historic day for the internet. A historic day for the world."
